I HATE colds!!!

I haven't had a cold in ages, and I have NO idea how I got this one! My husband, Ray, sorta started coming down with one when I did, but his seems to have dwindled away while mine is getting worse and worse. I slept for 3 or 4 hours on the livingroom couch this afternoon and that is NOT like me at all! I have this horrible croaky wheezing cough, my chest hurts and so does my head (and of course, my throat). Now my nose is getting all plugged up!

I am sooooooo glad that Ray & I went to see our darling new grandson at the hospital last night before this "horribleness" hit!!! His name is Zackary Tiberius Curry and he was 7# 6 oz, and 20 inches long. He got circumcised today and they sent him home 1 hour later. His daddy, Jon, says little Zack doesn't even seem to be in pain - poor little thing!

Well, tomorrow morning I take our car into Midas again to see if they can figure out the problem with the a/c. Wish me luck!!!

I made up a frozen drink for Ray & I that I thought would feel good on my throat and give us an extra dose of Vit. C. I took frozen Minute Maid orange juice concentrate (about half of a 12 oz. can). I blended it up in the blender with 4 jiggers of vodka, 5 or 6 scoops of Safeway's Mandarin Orange Sherbet and about 4 cups of ice. It was delicious! We drank them while watching an episode of "Monk". This is it's last season. It's pretty silly, but there isn't much to watch these days! I can't wait for our favorite shows to begin again this fall!

90 degrees - sigh!

I have absolutely no energy when it's hot! All I feel like is sitting here at the computer drinking iced coffee (thought the caffeine would get some energy going!) I expect a call any minute saying my newest grandchild is born. Today is my daughter-in-law, Beth's due date and what do you know??? She is in labor and at the hospital with her epidural already in effect! Annnnnnnnnnd, Ha Ha, my husband's ex wife left already for her vacation in Hawaii so we won't have to put up with her there while we are visiting Beth, Jon, and the baby in the hospital.

I am actually hoping she doesn't give birth for awhile since I don't want to drive up to Evergreen Hospital (picking up my mother-in-law, Gloria, first in Issaquah) until it cools down this evening.
We are STILL without air conditioning in our car. I thought we were going to have it fixed this morning. I was so HAPPY!!! BUT, my hopes were dashed when I brought it into Midas for my 10:30 appt. The manager said he would have called me except he didn't have my phone number. It turned out that their a/c expert had cut his finger to the bone on a piece of equip. yesterday and was going to be off work for a week. The guys that were there tried their best for 2 hours to figure it out, but to no avail. But at least they didn't charge me! I have another appt. on Friday when another a/c expert will be brought in from one of their other shops. He is researching what might be wrong as we speak.

The only good thing about sitting in Midas for 2 hours was that I got to read my Julie & Julia book. I love it soooooooo much!

Dirty Carpet Water

Oh what do I do with dirty carpet-cleaning water??? I don't want to pour it down the sink, because it is full of dirty carpet fiber. I don't want to pour it on the lawn, because the carpet cleaning solution might kill it!

My daughter Jessica is busily cleaning my carpet with my new Bissell carpet cleaner that I purchased to save money on carpet cleaning and I am busily filling empty juice and liquor bottles with "dirty carpet-cleaning water" cause I don't know what to do with it! Of course I am paying her to clean it, but not nearly as much as hiring a professional! Last time I hired one, he charged me $250. They charge for pre-treating spots (and I had a lot!) Then they charge for any square footage over their specified amount that will cost "such & such". The carpet cleaning man then talked me into Scotch Guarding it which costs a small fortune and doesn't seem to have helped very much. So $250. for less than 1,000 sq. feet of carpeting. And I didn't even get my stairs and upstairs done.

That said, my daughter (and my Bissell) did a really good job. I may never hire a professional again!

Blueberry Coffee Cake Recipe

To my 2 followers: So sorry I didn't get my Blueberry Coffee Cake up last night! I got involved in watching an old episode of "Secret Life of an American Teenager" and when I got finished I was too tired and went up to bed! I know! This show is a little "young" for me and fairly annoying at times, but once you start a show, and get involved, it's hard to stop! Last week there was a marathon of last season's "Secret Life" and we DVR'd it, so we have a huge amount of them taking up memory and need to watch them and get them out of the way. (Then we can start watching this season - hee hee!)

Anyway, here is the recipe:

Blueberry Coffee Cake

Ingredients for topping:
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Ingredients for cake:
2 large eggs
1 cup buttermilk
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 teaspoons grated orange peel (I found dried grated orange peel in the spice section - so much easier than grating an orange!)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup (1 stick) chilled butter, (I use salted) cut into slices
1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9x9 inch baking pan.

For topping: Stir all ingredients together in a bowl until blended. Set aside.

For cake: Whisk eggs, buttermilk, vanilla and orange peel in small bowl.

In a large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder and nutmeg. Using fingertips, rub butter into the dry ingredients until mixture resembles course meal. Stir in buttermilk mixture just until blended. Fold in blueberries.

Spread batter into greased pan. Sprinkle topping evenly over the top. Bake about 55 minutes, or until toothpick stuck into center comes out clean.

This cake is absolutely YUMMY served warm, but, as I said before, it is still deliciously moist the next day! Enjoy!!!!

Blueberry Coffeecake

It's BLUEBERRY SEASON!!! I made the most wonderful Blueberry Coffeecake for breakfast yesterday! I had gotten a great buy on blueberries at QFC the day before - buy 1 container & get 2 free. I think it was one of the best coffeecakes I have ever made, because it was still so moist and flavorful on the 2nd day. Usually they taste sort of dry the next day! I really haven't had to worry about how moist it is going to be tomorrow cause it's all gone!!!!!

I will post the recipe tonight because I have to cook dinner right now. I have a hungry husband waiting! I'll post a pic too!

My First Blog

Hello All! And that means my only follower - Jackie ( who I call Woman)! Until I have other followers, I will be blogging just for you, Woman!

After watching Julie & Julia, I decided I wanted to blog too! After all, I too, am writing a recipe book. It is called Nana's Winter Recipes - Chilis, Soups and Stews. (I'm probably going to revise the title). Any suggestions will be appreciated. My book also includes breads and desserts - all comfort-type foods you would love to eat on a winter's day. These are recipes that I have been cooking (and creating) since I was newly married (at age 16). And since I am now 63 (& almost 64) you can see that I have a lot of experience! I have typed 90+ recipes so far and plan on 100 recipes in total.

I am also working on a website called nanas-holiday-recipes.com which is going very slowly. My goal is to tell a little bit about each holiday - how, when and why it began - and to share with my readers at least 6 of my very best (& favorite) recipes to help you celebrate each holiday. As my website progesses, and I add more recipes, I will let you all know. If you would like to see the recipes I have posted so far, just check out my website! (www.nanas-holiday-recipes.com). I know I have a LONG WAYS TO GO, so please bear with me.

Thank you Woman for setting up my blog for me!!!
